Temperament

Tea Cup Australian Shepherds love to play and are courageous, loyal and affectionate, they are excellent children\’s companions. Tea Cup Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent and easy to train. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without enough mental and and physical exercise. They need a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and easily bored.

Like the larger Australian Shepherd they are great herders and need to be taught that it is not acceptable to herd humans. They enjoy working small stock and make fine companions. This breed is usually not aggressive, but make sure you are the dogs firm and consistent pack leader to avoid the \”Small Dog Syndrome. Remember, dogs are not humans, but canines so be sure to meet their natural instincts as animals.

As mentioned there are three accepted small Australian Shepherds.

The teacup Aussie will weigh under 12lbs.

The Toy Aussie will weigh 12-17 lbs.

The Miniature Aussie will weigh 20-40 lbs

Health Problems

The gene for the beautiful merle coloration also carries a blind/deaf factor. This may be expressed only in merle/merle crosses. Ensure sire and dam of puppies have been tested and are certified clear prior to purchasing a puppy.

Living Conditions

The

Tea Cup Australian Shepherd

will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are moderately active indoors and will do okay with a small yard. This breed will do well in cold climates.

Exercise

The Mini Aussie need to be taken on daily, long walks. This energetic little dog needs plenty of vigorous exercise to stay in shape, or better yet, some real work to do. They are great to take a family outings, fishing and camping trips. I suggest that you check if there are any dog parks in your area. These are fenced in parks that have been developed for this very purpose.
